I am an emerging multi-disciplinary Brisbane artist.

I have an innate curiosity in detail and juxtapositions. My works respond to my domestic environment, scenes, experiences and the macro insect world in my garden or on my travels. I am influenced by overlooked elements that lie within and around local environments, with themes of contrast forming the context of my practice. My discoveries through the macro lense of often ‘un-noticed’ or ‘brushed aside’ elements in our ecosystems, form a strong direction in recent pieces. I alter and combine my photographs through the fine art processes of painting and drawing to create scenes.

Both my fine art and photographic works endeavour to share wonderment of our natural environments and domestic every day scenes.  I love beautiful, quirky and aesthetically pleasing things – for me, thoughtful design is important. I aim to incorporate notions of narrative, to invite the viewer to keep exploring, connecting, finding scenes of familiarity and the imagined. Here is where abstraction or purposeful juxtaposition of things and/or insects, play important roles. I am working at visually combining macro with abstraction; interesting juxtapositions, both expressive and polished; movement, direction and detail – through application of material as well as conceptually.

My photography is purposefully un-edited. To me, the authenticity of leaving images untouched gives credit to the processes and challenges of photography in a world full of saturated imagery, where we often don't know what is real or imagined. This is especially true when photographing macro insects full of movement. Often only a few shots are useable. My form of ‘editing’ is through a variety of fine art processes, sketching, altering, combining, imagining.

With a change in lifestyle from full time teaching to the joys, challenges and connections formed through motherhood, Jessica has reignited her practice more fully.
